Mrs. Joe analysis
From reading this quote about Mrs. Joe, I think that she is very abusive and controlling towards Joe and Pip. When Pip comes home from the cemetery, Mrs. Joe asks where he was. When Pip does not answer right away, she takes out the tickler and threatens Pip with hostility and harassment. I think that now Pip feels compelled to steal the bread, brandy, and butter from her. Now Pip has his hands tied because I think he will be beaten if he does not tell Mrs. Joe what he did. And if he does tell her, then she will beat him even harder. In my opinion, Mrs. Joe uses hostility because she is desperate to find some money and some happiness. Pip knows that if he intervenes in the quarrel that is described in the quote, he will be beaten. Also judging by the quote, she is quite saddened by the death of her and Pip's family. People may disagree with me, but this is what i felt after i read this quote.

Mrs.Joe uses abuse to get people to do what they want.Beating Pip and Joe is a way to manipulate them into doing her orders. She projects her unhappiness on other people by beating them sensless, like she does with Pip (even though she refers to it as "raising by hand").
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point, but I disagree with your evidence and reasoning. Mrs. Joe is very abusive and controlling towards Pip, but it has nothing to do with money and doesn't even relate that much to happiness. It is her job to care for the family, and she achieves this by controlling the lives of those who she cares about and even beating them. She is willing to protect her loved ones by any means necessary, which is why she is loved by the rest of the town. Also, this quote occurs after Joe gives Pip extra food at the dinner table, not after Pip comes home from the cemetery.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in the aspect of why Mrs. Joe treats people certain ways, but not with why she does it. I believe that you were right when you said that you thought that she treats people this way to show control over people, and so they dont mess with her. One thing that i disagree with you about though is what she is doing it for. I don't belive that Mrs. Joe feels like doing this action is for the outlook of getting money, but for getting power.
